Life remains crippled for 50th day in Kashmir; Army deployed in parts of Srinagar

Srinagar, Aug 27 (UNI) Life remained crippled for the 50th day today due to curfew and restriction imposed by authorities and strike called by separatists against the killings of civilians in security force firing since July 9 in Kashmir, where with the death of one more youth in fresh clashes the toll has risen to 69. Army has been deployed on roads leading to headquarters of 15 Corps to foil any march by separatists. Officials here today said strict day and night curfew remained in force in the entire district, Pampore and main town Pulwama, where a youth Shakeel Ahmed Ganie was killed and several others injured when security forces opened fire and burst teargas shells to disperse pro-freedom demonstrators in south Kashmir yesterday. Hundreds of para-military forces and state police personnel, wearing bullet proof jackets and holding automatic weapons have been deployed in Srinagar and Pulwama to strictly implement the curfew restrictions. Strict curfew also remained in force in Pampore on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, where security forces have been deployed in strength to stop and ‘pro-freedom’ demonstrations. Meanwhile, only restriction on assembly of people under Section 144 CrPc continued in rest of the valley. Security forces and state police personnel also remained deployed in strength in areas where only restriction on assembly of more than four people have been imposed to stop any pro-freedom slogans. However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as people from different places in the Valley, which has been placed only under restrictions, alleged that they were not being allowed to move out of their houses. Even though authorities said curfew had been lifted from Anantnag, people alleged that they were not being allowed to move on roads and security forces were directing them to remain indoors. “I didn’t know that there was no curfew in Anantnag town, because security forces have been directing us to remain indoors. If curfew has been lifted, someone should inform the security forces about the same,” Shabir Ahmad, a resident of Anantnag town, told UNI over the phone. “We are facing acute shortage of essentials, particularly medicines. They (security forces) are not even allowing medical shops to open. How can you say that the curfew has been lifted,” he added. MORE UNI ABS QAB PR AE AN1536
