Rahul Gandhi to launch Kisan Yatra in UP in Sept

Rahul Gandhi to launch Kisan Yatra in UP in Sept
Lucknow, Aug 27 (UNI) With party’s chief ministerial candidate Sheila Dikshit and state president Raj Babbar underway in the third phase of two separate yatras in Uttar Pradesh for their Mission 2017, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is preparing for a month long statewide Kisan yatra to raise the “voice of farmers” from first week of September. Party leaders and team members of Prashant Kishor were finalising the Rahul Gandhi's yatra which could be called as ‘Kisan Yatra’. The other two yatras, under the banner of ‘27 Saal UP Behal’ and led by CM face Sheila Dikshit and UP Congress president Raj Babbar, had begun on August 21 and will conclude on October 9. Party leaders here today said Rahul would raise issues like floods, government’s failure to provide crop loss compensation and non-payment of sugarcane dues during his yatra which will criss cross the state with starting from eastern UP and end in the far west. According to the preliminary schedule, the leaders said, the Congress vice-president will begin his first yatra around September 6 from Rudrapur Assembly constituency in Deoria - the home ground of party MLA Akhilesh Pratap Singh, a close confidant of 10 Janpath. He will travel through the terai districts, visiting villages and holding multiple 'chaupals' and 'nukkad sabhas'. Division-wise meetings, to finalise the plans of the yatra, will begin from tomorrow , while a formal announcement of plans is expected to be made from New Delhi very soon. "The aim is to reach out to a large number of families in every block and to seek feedback from them," a party leader said. The first leg of the yatra is expected to end around September 21 while the second leg is expected to restart, after a break of about one week, from Lucknow in the last week of September. The kisan yatra will then travel through central and West UP to culminate in New Delhi on October 5, after a month-long interaction with UP farmers. For the purpose of making preparations, the Congress has put vice-president Rajesh Mishra in charge of East UP preparations while Imran Masood will oversee preparations in the Western districts. Rahul Gandhi had undertaken similar statewide campaigns before the 2012 Assembly polls and had covered over 100 constituencies. However, despite this, Congress could only win 28 seats out of the 403 seats in UP. Sources said taking a lesson from the past, Rahul this time would not only hold rallies but also meet villagers and interact with them. A senior leader said the yatra would be mix of such interaction with locals, public meetings and padyatras. “In the past, the focus was just on big public meetings, which Rahul Gandhi addressed and left. There was very little one-to-one interaction with the public, who could not connect with him. “However, this time, besides rallies, the focus would be on one-on-one interaction with the public. He would walk with them and speak to them. It will be literally like knocking on the doors of the voters,” said a leader. The party also plans to make Rahul address less rallies compared to last time. Sources said a section of senior leaders from UP met in New Delhi yesterday to discuss the party’s campaign strategy. Leaders were briefed about a “mass outreach programme at” to 25,000 households. While the leaders have been asked to participate in the programmes atleast at two divisional headquarters on August 30, party’s block level workers would distribute campaign material at 25,000 households for the next round of mobilisation.
