Six killed, 49 injured in Mumbai road accident

Mumbai, Dec 10 (UNI) Six people were killed and 49 injured in a major road accident near Anjuman Islam School on S G Barve Marg at Kurla (west), an eastern suburb, on Monday evening, the BMC Disaster Control said here on Tuesday.
The accident took place at 9.50 pm near Anjum-E-Islam school, located on SG Barve Marg, when the bus was going from Kurla railway station to LBS Road.
The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that 49 people have suffered injuries, and they have been rushed to nearby hospitals, which include government-run Bhabha Hospital and private Seven Hills Hospital, City Hospital, and Habib Hospital.
Four police officers have been injured and are currently being treated at a seven-hill hospital, with their condition reported to be stable.
The condition of those injured is currently being assessed.
Among the dead, some have been identified as: Kaniz Fatema Ansari, 55, Afreen A. Shaikh, 19, Anam Shaikh, 18, and, Shivam Kashyap, 18.
Though the reason behind the accident is yet to be ascertained, the official said that the driver of the BEST Electric Bus (MH-01, EM - 8228) lost control over the wheel and dashed into pedestrians as well as 25 various types of vehicles.
The vehicles damaged included autorickshaws, scooters, and motorcycles; some cars; a police jeep, etc.
Bus driver, identified as Sanjay More, was allegedly in an inebriated state and lost control over the vehicle, which hurtled into the vehicles and pedestrians, while eyewitnesses claimed he was seen laughing and enjoying his death drive.
Though the exact causes of the crash are being probed, it is suspected that the accident happened due to a brake failure, and the bus driver has been booked on multiple charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
CCTV footage of the tragedy that emerged this morning showed people screaming, running helter skelter to save themselves on the narrow and congested road.
