Ex-Cong District Prez P N Patil passes away at 71

Kolhapur, May 23 (UNI) Pandurang Nivruti, alias P.N. Patil, the former Congress district president, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 71.

Patil succumbed to complications from a severe head injury after a fall at his residence last Sunday.

Despite undergoing surgery and receiving intensive care, including modern life support and artificial respiration, he could not recover and passed away at 6:00 AM on Thursday in a private hospital.

Patil is survived by two sons and a daughter.

His last rites will be performed on Thursday afternoon in his native village, Sadoli Khalsa, in Karveer tehsil.

A devoted leader of the Congress party and a staunch supporter of the Gandhi family, Patil was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the old Sangrul constituency in 2004 and from the Karveer constituency in 2019, both times with significant margins.

He served as the district Congress president for an impressive 29 years, beginning in 1999.

Additionally, he held the position of vice president of the state Congress.

Patil's contributions extended beyond politics; he was the founder of Rajivji Sahakari Soot Girni and Shripatrao Sahakari Bank.

He also served as the chairman and director of the Kolhapur District Central Cooperative Bank and was the former chairman of Bhogavati Sugar Factory.

In honour of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Patil organised the Sadbhavana Daud, an annual goodwill run, on Gandhi's birth anniversary for the past 30 years. His loyalty to the Gandhi family was particularly evident in his efforts to install a life-size statue of Rajiv Gandhi in Kolhapur, which was inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi
