Kolhapur, Dec 7 (UNI) NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar said on Saturday that it was wrong to comment on tampering of EVMs (electronic voting machines) in the just-concluded Maharashtra Assembly election in absence of any authentic information about alleged malpractice in EVM.
Talking to reporters here this evening, he said, "Even though the results of assembly elections in different constituencies raised suspicions, we do not have any authentic information about alleged malpractice in EVMs, so it is not right to make any comments on EVMs without any proof."
However, he expressed surprise about electoral results saying that the Congress got about 80 lakh votes in the assembly election but won only 15 seats whereas the Shiv Sena (Shinde) got 79 lakh votes and won 57 seats and asked how this could have happened.
"But, as we do not have any authentic information about it, it will not be right to make any comment on this issue. However, there are some suspicions on this issue," he said.
On oath-taking by the new MLAs of the Mahayuti, the NCP (SP) chief said that there was no enthusiasm nor joy in the state while taking oath by new MLAs of Mahayuti.
On outcome of the election results, he observed that there was not any enthusiasm, people were disturbed after the landslide victory of the Mahayuti.
He pointed to the imposition of section 144 by police in Markarwadi village of Solapur district where voting was held on ballot paper, which was cancelled later, he said.
Asked about the debacle of Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in assembly election, he replied that MVA alliance partners need not worry about the results, and they should start preparations to face the people again in upcoming local bodies elections in the state.
The MVA would contest these elections together, he emphasised.
To a poser on the boycott by MVA's MLAs of swearing-in ceremony today, Pawar replied that all opposition MLAs would likely to take oath on Sunday (tomorrow) and would work in assembly to ensure all electoral promises made by Mahayuti, including to raise amount of the Ladki Bahin yojana from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100.
On nomination of Leader of Opposition by opposition, he said since the opposition does not have required numbers, they would not insist on the post.
Asked about a wad of currency notes found under the seat of Rajya Sabha MP of Congress Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Pawar said that Singhvi is a notable lawyer and he would not resort to such act.
