Maharashtra: Lokayukta Bill passed; Chief Minister now within Lokayukta's ambit

Nagpur, Dec 12 (UNI) The Maharashtra Legislature approved the Maharashtra State Lokayukta Amendment Bill, 2025, in both houses after incorporating three minor revisions proposed by the central government. The updated law, which will come into force once the governor gives assent, grants the state’s anti-corruption ombudsman the authority to investigate the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers and other public officials on allegations of corruption.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who introduced the Bill in the assembly, said on Thursday that the centre had sought three adjustments to the earlier version of the Lokayukta Bill passed by the assembly in December 2022 and the council in December 2023.
The changes include updating references to three criminal laws that were recently renamed by the central government, modifying the appointment clause so that the current Lokayukta remains in office until a new one is appointed and explicitly placing officers appointed by the state to bodies such as MahaRERA under Lokayukta jurisdiction.
