Tbilisi, Nov 16 (UNI) The Georgian Central Election Commission approved on Saturday the final report of the parliamentary elections held on October 26 with ruling Georgian Dream party receiving 53.93% of the votes and 89 seats in parliament.
The CEC meeting was held amid protests as opposition members do not accept the elections. The meeting was temporarily suspended as one of the opposition politicians doused CEC Chairman Giorgi Kalandarishvili with black paint.
Parliament in Georgia has to be convened by President Salome Zourabichvili no later than the 10th day after the final report has been approved. If the president refuses to do it, the parliament will gather independently.
While four opposition parties made it to the parliament after the October 26 vote with a collective 37.78%, they refused to recognize the outcome and demanded an international investigation and a fresh vote, claiming fraud.
Zourabichvili, who has long been in confrontation with the government over its law on foreign agents and its reluctance to join the Western sanctions regime against Russia, among other policies, not only rejected the election results but also called on people to take to the streets and protest.
