Russia expects building of North-South corridor's part in Iran to start in 2024

Moscow, May 17 (UNI) The building of the railroad section of the western route of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which will link the Iranian city of Rasht with the port of Astara on the Caspian Sea, is expected to start already this year in parallel with design works, Russian Deputy Transport Minister Dmitry Zverev said on Friday.
"The most important decision was the signing by Russia and Iran [of the agreement] on the construction of the Rasht-Astara section [of the INSTC], which had been developed and discussed for 20 years, but nevertheless we managed to sign it... We hope that from June we will start the first survey works, a performance contract will be signed, and construction works will start this year in parallel with design works to launch the through line in 2028," Zverev said at the International Economic Forum "Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum" in Russia’s Kazan.
The INSTC is an international multi-mode network stretching nearly 4,500 miles from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Mumbai, India. The corridor is an alternative to the sea route connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Indian Ocean countries through the Suez Canal. It consists of three routes, namely the Trans-Caspian route using railways and ports and the Western and Eastern land routes. In May 2023, Russia and Iran signed a deal on the construction of the remaining Astara-Rasht railroad section of the INSTC.
