Nineteen people killed in Nepal protests, Home Minister Lekhak resigns

New Delhi/Kathmandu, Sep 8 (UNI) At least 19 people have died and more than 300 injured in violent demonstrations by youth and students across Nepal today in protest against corruption and government's ban on social media including facebook, twitter, Instragram and WhatsApp.
Reports said 17 of the deceased were in Kathmandu Valley and two in Itahari. These include 7 casualties in Trauma Center, three each at Everest Hospital and Civil Hospital, two at Kathmandu Medical College and 1 at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Authorities said the identities of the deceased and those injured had not been confirmed yet.
In a late night development Nepal Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned citing moral responsibility for the violence and deaths. He tendered resignation to Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli during a Cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence. Lekhak was appointed Home Minister on July 15, 2024.

New Delhi, July 18 (UNI) Hours after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site by Delhi Police and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, appealed that no medication or medical procedure be administered without the consent of his family and the doctors who had been monitoring his health throughout his 20-day hunger strike.

Delhi Police shift Sonam Wangchuk to hospital amid health concerns
