Openers Rohit Sharma (5 ) and Shubman Gill (0) were unbeaten at the crease at the break, with India hoping to consolidate their position in the final session.
Earlier, Joe Root's decision to bat backfired as England were bowled out for 112 inside two sessions despite Zak Crawley's fluent 53.
Left-arm spinner Axar Patel claimed a career-best 6-38 while spin colleague Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets.
