Pipili by poll rescheduled

Bhubaneswar, Apr 22 (UNI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) today rescheduled the date for Pipili byelection.
Odisha Chief Electoral Officer S K Lohani said as per the revised notification issued by the ECI,the by election will be held on May 16 instead of May 13 as notified earlier.
The CEO said the counting of votes would be made on May 19 and the election process would be completed before May 21 next.
The CEO said the date was changed since Eid Fitr is likely to fall on May 13 and some people requested the ECI to change the poll date as it would be inconvenient for them to participate in the polling.
Earlier the date for the bye poll was fixed for April 17 but it was adjourned following the death of Congress candidate Ajit Mangaraj on April 14 due to covid and the date for the bye poll was fixed for May 13.
By election to Pipili scheduled to be held on April 17last was adjourned following the demise of Congress candidate Ajit Mangraj who died at a private hospital on April 14 last after being infected with coronavirusLater the ECI had announced that the by election to Pipili would be held on May 13 and election process would be completed before May 18 next.The Election Commission of India changed the date of polling from May 13 to 16 after some people in a petition requested that since idol filter is falling on May 13 it would be a problem for them and requested the Commission to change the date of bye election.But the date for filing nomination, scrutiny of nomination papers and the date of withdrawal of candidature remained unchanged.The last date for filing nominations has been fixed for April 26. While the scrutiny of nominations will be held on the next day,the last date for withdrawal is slated for April 29.
Mr Lohani said in addition to the existing covid guidelinesthe ECI has added certain new restrictions.
The ECI also ordered that the campaigning would end 72 hours instead of 48 hours before the polling date.
As per the new guidelines the Political parties would ensure that all covid guidelines are maintained during the campaign and would provide masks sanitizer and make arrangements for hand washing.
The expenditure made on these heads be added to their election campaign expenditure.
The ECI also ordered that as per the state government guidelines issued on April 19 last no political meetings and rallies could be held but the political parties can make house to house campaign.
During the house to house campaign they would have to ensure that covid guidelines are followed and warned that strict action would be taken in case of violation of the guideline.
