Piyush Goyal inaugurates National Turmeric Board in Telangana

Nizamabad (Telangana), Jan 14 (UNI) Union Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday virtually launched the National Turmeric Board office in Nizamabad, aimed at boosting the development and export of turmeric, popularly known as the 'Golden Spice.'

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister emphasised the significance of launching the National Turmeric Board on an auspicious day of celebrations across the country. He highlighted that the Board will include representatives from various Ministries, exporters, and producers' organisations to ensure a holistic approach to turmeric development.

Referred to as the "Golden Spice," turmeric is a crucial crop for farmers across 20 states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Meghalaya.

Goyal underlined the immense potential for increasing turmeric production, particularly in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

He expressed confidence that the Board's establishment will boost the income of turmeric producers nationwide.

The Board will focus on research and development of innovative turmeric products and value addition to enhance exports. It will also promote awareness about turmeric's medicinal and essential properties, explore methods to increase yield and strengthen logistics and supply chains for trade expansion into new markets.

Goyal highlighted that the Board will ensure quality and safety standards for turmeric production and exports.

He noted that in 2023-24, turmeric cultivation spanned 3.05 lakh hectares in India, producing 10.74 lakh tonnes. India accounts for over 7 percent of global turmeric production, with 30 varieties cultivated domestically.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Arvind Dharmapuri, Member of Parliament from Nizamabad, also attended the event.

The Board's composition includes representatives from the Ministry of AYUSH, the Department of Pharmaceuticals, the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and the Department of Commerce. Additionally, representatives from Maharashtra, Telangana, and Meghalaya—known for its Lakadong turmeric—will play key roles.

The National Turmeric Board will spearhead efforts to support turmeric farmers, enhance trade opportunities, and coordinate with government departments and agencies. By tapping into the growing global demand for turmeric and its wellness benefits, the Board aims to position India as a leader in turmeric production and trade.

In 2023-24, India exported 1.62 lakh tonnes of turmeric and turmeric products valued at USD 226.5 million, accounting for 62 percent of global trade in turmeric.
