Punjab’s public transport grinds to a halt as 3,000 buses stay Off roads

Chandigarh, Aug 14 (UNI) Approximately 3,000 buses operated by Punjab Roadways, PRTC, and PUNBUS remained off the roads across Punjab today causing significant inconvenience to commuters. The strike, called by employee unions of these public transport services, has disrupted travel plans, leaving passengers stranded since early morning.
The unions initiated the strike after failed negotiations with the state government over the issuance of tenders for bus permits under the kilometer scheme, which would allow private companies to operate on certain routes. The first round of talks, held at 11 a.m., which ended without resolution. A second round of discussions is currently underway, but no breakthrough has been reported so far, according to PRTC Contract Workers’ Union leader Roshm Singh Gill.
Harkesh Kumar, Senior Vice President of the PRTC, PUNBUS, and Punjab Roadways Contract Workers’ Unions, accused Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar of neglecting long-pending employee demands. The unions have also reiterated their call to cancel the process of granting permits to private companies.
