Refugees start returning to Myanmar as tensions ease in Chin border areas

Aizawl, July 13 (UNI) A fragile calm along the Myanmar-Mizoram border has prompted the return of more than half the refugees who had fled recent clashes in Chin state, with over 2,300 people making their way back to villages like Khawmawi and Rihkhawdar from Zokhawthar in Mizoram, an official said today.
Only around 1,300 displaced persons now remain at the Indo-Myanmar border trade centre after another 148 people made their way back across the border on Sunday, a village official confirmed.
Zokhawthar village council president Laldinthara said the mass return began after local authorities in Myanmar asked whether refugees were prepared to go back. The flow started last morning, with police and Assam Rifles personnel overseeing the repatriation process to Khawmawi and Rihkhawdar.
