Moscow, Sep 11 (UNI) A freight train derailed in the western Russian region of Belgorod overnight following suspected interference of unauthorized persons in rail transport operations, the Russian Railways rail company said on Wednesday.
"According to updated information, unauthorized individuals interfered in the operation of rail transport yesterday, on September 10, at 23:17 (20:17 GMT), causing 11 empty cars and the locomotive to derail. There were no victims," the statement read.
The Russian Investigative Committee announced a criminal investigation into what it suspects was an act of terrorism.
The committee's transport department on transport is examining the site to determine circumstances of the crash, the investigators said. A search is underway to identify people responsible for the derailment.
