Sajad Lone, Mirwaiz flay govt over highway closure, apple growers' losses

Srinagar, Sep 15(UNI) Amid mounting anger among apple growers over the prolonged closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway, J&K Peoples Conference President Sajad Lone today accused the government of ‘criminal negligence,’ while Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed deep anguish at the plight of orchardists, urging authorities to ensure unhindered movement of fruit laden trucks.
In a statement, MLA Handwara Lone said that apples meant for markets across India are rotting by the truckload while the J&K government looks the other way. He said the situation has pushed thousands of growers to the brink, yet no remedial measures are forthcoming from those in power.
“The apples destined for the rest of the country are in a state of rot. Massive losses for the apple growers. Inclement weather is not the fault of the government. But sitting like a mute spectator and doing nothing is criminal,” he declared.
