New Delhi, June 13 (UNI) The internal crisis within the Trinamool Congress intensified today after senior party leader and veteran parliamentarian Sudip Bandyopadhyay met union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi, fuelling speculation of a widening revolt against the leadership of Mamata Banerjee.
The meeting acquired added political significance as Bandyopadhyay, considered one of Ms Banerjee's closest associates and a key figure in the party's parliamentary strategy, was accompanied by dissident TMC Lok Sabha MP Satabdi Roy.
Sources said the two leaders travelled together from Kolkata before heading to Yadav's residence in the national capital, a development seen as evidence of increasing coordination between rebel TMC lawmakers and sections of the BJP leadership.
The development comes amid claims by the dissident camp that it commands the support of 19 to 20 MPs from the TMC's 28-member contingent in the Lok Sabha. Although the numbers have not been independently verified, rebel leaders insist that a sizeable section of the party's parliamentary wing is dissatisfied with the current leadership and is exploring an independent political course.
Roy and Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar have emerged as leading faces of the rebellion, which has gathered momentum over recent weeks. The dissident bloc is reportedly preparing to approach Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition as a separate parliamentary group.
According to sources, the rebels intend to argue that they represent the "real TMC" and should therefore be granted official status within Parliament.
"The numbers are on our side, and we will place the facts before the Speaker," a leader associated with the dissident faction said, expressing confidence that the group would secure institutional recognition.
The rebel MPs have also indicated that while they plan to function independently in the Lok Sabha, they are willing to extend outside support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government on key legislative issues. Such support, if formalised, could bolster the ruling coalition's position in the lower house and potentially influence the passage of important legislation.
Adding to the political intrigue, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is expected to arrive in New Delhi on Sunday. He is likely to meet the rebel TMC MPs ahead of their proposed interaction with the Lok Sabha Speaker, further intensifying speculation about coordination between the dissidents and the BJP.
The developments have drawn considerable attention because of their potential impact on parliamentary equations ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session. Political observers note that the BJP has been seeking to consolidate support in the Lok Sabha amid reports that the government may pursue a constitutional amendment related to delimitation.
Any constitutional amendment requires approval by a special majority in both Houses of Parliament. During the previous session, the NDA was reportedly short of the numbers needed to secure passage of a constitutional amendment linked to delimitation, underlining the importance of additional support in the House.
Against this backdrop, the emergence of a substantial dissident faction within the TMC has triggered intense political calculations in both New Delhi and Kolkata. While support from rebel MPs could help the BJP overcome crucial numerical hurdles on contentious legislation, the rebellion poses one of the most serious internal challenges faced by Ms Banerjee's party in recent years.
Neither the TMC leadership nor the BJP has officially commented on the implications today's meeting. However, the image of a senior TMC leader such as Bandyopadhyay meeting a senior BJP minister in the company of rebel MPs is likely to deepen concerns within the ruling party in West Bengal.
With the dissident camp preparing to stake its claim before the Lok Sabha Speaker, the focus will now be on whether it can demonstrate the numerical strength it claims to possess and whether Parliament grants it separate recognition. The outcome could have far-reaching consequences not only for the future of the Trinamool Congress but also for the legislative dynamics of the current Lok Sabha.
