Tata Motors To Rank Among Top 4 Global CV Makers: N Chandrasekaran

Mumbai, June 5 (UNI) Tata Motors will expand globally in the next five years, and with the acquisition of Italian commercial vehicle and powertrain manufacturer, Iveco Group, it will rank among the top four commercial vehicle makers in the world, according to Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran.
Tata Motors is in the process of acquiring the Iveco Group, in an all-cash deal valued at approximately €3.8 billion (around $4.4 billion USD). This acquisition will create a global commercial vehicle powerhouse with combined annual sales exceeding 540,000 units.
Speaking at the Tata Motors commercial vehicles dealer business planning meet 2026 today, Chandrasekaran said that the Tata Group's automotive business which is “both large and globally competitive” is poised to clock revenues of USD 80 billion, as compared to the Tata Group's total revenue of USD 100 billion in 2017.
Chandrasekaran also highlighted the proposed acquisition of Iveco, expected to be completed in the second quarter of FY27, subject to regulatory approvals.
The deal would provide access to advanced technologies, expand global market reach and strengthen product capabilities across geographies, he said, noting that Tata Motors and Iveco together could emerge among the world's top four commercial vehicle companies.
He said Tata Motors commercial vehicles was now a diversified portfolio spanning heavy trucks, intermediate and light commercial vehicles, buses, mobility solutions, digital businesses and international operations. He indicated that the company expects strong volume growth and a larger global footprint over the next three to four years.
Chandrasekaran said that the company's commercial vehicles business is entering a new phase of growth following the demerger of its passenger vehicle operations, though he cautioned that geopolitical uncertainties, market volatility and industry disruptions would continue to pose challenges.

"There will be challenges—geopolitical shifts, market volatility, and disruptions. But with the right capability, mindset, and resilience, we will navigate them," Chandrasekaran told dealers at Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles' National Dealers Conference 2026.

Calling the demerger a “defining milestone”, Chandrasekaran said the separation would allow both businesses to pursue independent strategies and growth trajectories. He noted that while the commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles businesses shared a common legacy, they required different technologies, capital structures and customer approaches.
He stated that the focus of Tata Motors commercial vehicles will be on electric mobility, hydrogen-powered technologies, connected vehicles and artificial intelligence-led transformation.
“We want to lead in technology and innovation and the company would continue investing aggressively in research and development,” Chandrasekharan added.
