Taylor Kitsch: I was literally sleeping on the subway

Vancouver, Jan 18 (UNI) In a candid statement about his initial struggles, actor Taylor Kitsch says he had to even sleep on the subway after coming to New York City from Canada with dream of breaking into the world of showbiz.
"I was literally sleeping on the subway," 43-year-old Kitsch said in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, as he narrated his struggles, personal sacrifices and milestones that shaped his career and character.
In 2002, He came to New York City, but found it difficult to make ends meet.
A focal point came in his career when he met a talent manager who saw potential in him. “She was like, ‘What do you want to do?’ I said, ‘character pieces,’” he recalls. “She was like, 'All right, I'll take a risk on you.'"
"All I’ve ever wanted to do is disappear into different characters," Kitsch says. "It’s never been about leading a show or being in the limelight or money.”
Kitsch found fame fame in 2006 with the NBC television series Friday Night Lights in which he portrayed Tim Riggins, the charming yet troubled high school player. The role not only resonated with audiences but also became a turning point in his career.
"People, for some reason or another, just really gravitated to Riggins," he says. "It truly affected my life, and all for the better."
While filming FNL, Kitsch transitioned onto feature films notably playing Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009). "That process couldn't have been more different with being on stages and hitting marks,” he says. "They didn't want me to do improv like on FNL."
In the mid-2010s, Kitsch stepped away from acting for two years to help his sister, Shelby overcome opioid addiction. "Probably the proudest thing I've done in my life is sticking with her and being a part of the way it's turned out," he shared.
Now sober, Shelby works as a travelling nurse and played a key role in advising Kitsch for his performance in Netflix's Painkiller (2023), where he limned an opioid addict. “It was really cathartic,” he says. “It's probably one of the closest jobs to me that I've ever done.”
Inspired by his sister's journey, Kitsch is developing a nature retreat on his 22-acre property in Bozeman, Montana, where he has lived since, 2021. “I didn’t even know sober escapes existed until I had the crash course with my sis,” Kitsch says. “I was like, ‘Man, it sounds incredible to offer people a chance to reconnect in nature and slow things down.'"
