Vigilance must on Nepal border as unrest grows: Defence expert

Bengaluru, Sept 10 (UNI) Defence expert GJ Singh today cautioned that India’s porous border with Nepal could allow infiltration by anti-social elements and terrorists, warning that vigilance and preparedness are crucial as the Himalayan nation sinks deeper into political turmoil.
"India shares a 1,750-km border with Nepal, and Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for about 650 km. While India is a strong democracy with 76-77 years of uninterrupted functioning and may not be directly affected by Nepal’s unrest, the porous border creates a real possibility of unwanted elements slipping in to instigate our youth," Singh told UNI in an interview.
Unlike the heavily fortified frontiers with Pakistan, China and Bangladesh, the Indo-Nepal border lacks a strong security grid, he observed. “It is not very well defended, and this gap makes infiltration by terrorists and anti-social elements a genuine threat. The need for heightened caution and readiness cannot be overstated,” he said.
