Vijayawada, Feb 21 (UNI) The voting for the fourth and final phase of Gram Panchayat elections began in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday.
Election officials said that voting began this morning in 13 districts in Andhra Pradesh to elect 2,743 village sarpanches and 22,423 ward members. Over 67.75 lakh voters would exercise their franchise to elect Gram Sarpanches and ward members in 16 revenue divisions and 161 mandals across the state.
Barring rain, voters were seen standing in queues in front of polling stations in some mandals. Officials said that 41.55 percent of polling has been recorded till noon. The highest polling percentage of 46.83 recorded in Kurnool district while lowest percentage of 33.94 has been recorded in Nellore district.
Except for sporadic incidents, far and wide the polling was peaceful, officials said. The counting of votes would be taken up in the evening.
Meanwhile, Director General of police Gaugh Sawang inspected a polling station at Kothavalasa in Vizainagaram district. He interacted with the voters at the polling station. The DGP told the media that the voting was going on in a peaceful manner across the state.
