Wagner Moura becomes first Brazilian actor nominated at Oscars

Los Angeles, Jan 23 (UNI) In a historic moment for Brazilian cinema, ‘The Secret Agent’ has earned ‘Best Picture and Best Actor’ nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, shining a spotlight on Brazil’s filmmaking on the global stage.
Actor Wagner Moura received a Best Actor nomination for his role in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s political thriller, becoming the first Brazilian male actor to be nominated in the category, Deadline reports.
He is the third Brazilian actor overall to earn an Oscar nod, following Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) and Fernanda Montenegro (Central Station), both of whom won in the Best Actress category.
Moura is competing against Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Michael B. Jordan (Sinners).
In addition to Best Actor, The Secret Agent has received nominations for Best International Feature, Best Picture, and the inaugural Casting category, marking its second consecutive Best Picture nod following last year’s I’m Still Here, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, the film is set during Brazil’s 1977 military dictatorship and follows Moura’s character, a hunted political dissident, as he returns to Recife to reunite with his son and is forced to live like a spy.
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, emerging as the most decorated entry of the lineup. Moura, who also won Best Male Actor at the 2026 Golden Globes, reflected on the film’s themes in his acceptance speech: “The Secret Agent is a film about memory, or the lack of memory, and generational trauma. I think that if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So this is to the ones that are sticking with their values in difficult moments.”
Final Oscar voting is scheduled for February 26 to March 5, 2026, with the 98th Academy Awards ceremony set for March 15.
