Wedding called off at last minute in Punjab over dowry demand; Bride’s family seeks justice

Chandigarh, Dec 15 (UNI) A wedding ceremony in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district turned into a scene of distress after the groom’s family failed to arrive with the wedding procession, allegedly over an increased dowry demand. The baraat was scheduled to travel from Ludhiana to Mukerian, but the bride was left waiting as guests looked on, and prepared food went to waste.
According to the bride’s family, the marriage date had already been postponed twice earlier. When December 14 was finally fixed, the groom’s relatives informed them by phone that they would not be bringing the baraat, claiming the bride’s family was not in a position to meet their dowry expectations.
The bride’s father, Sain Muhammad, a resident of Bela Sariyana village under Hajipur block, said the nikah had already been solemnized. He explained that under their community practices, a formal divorce is required before the girl can remarry, a process that could cost nearly ₹20 lakh. The family, which depends on livestock for livelihood, said they had already spent heavily on wedding arrangements and hosting community meals.
