Brussels, May 21 (UNI) The European Commission has revised down its forecast for EU GDP growth in 2026 to 1.1% from the 1.4% projected last autumn, while the eurozone estimate was lowered to 0.9% from 1.2%, according to its spring forecast released on Thursday.
"After reaching 1.5% in 2025, GDP growth in the EU is now projected to slow down to 1.1% in 2026, a downward revision of 0.3 percentage points from the Autumn 2025 Economic Forecast projection (1.4%). GDP growth is then set to edge up to 1.4% in 2027. Growth projections for the euro area are similarly revised down, to 0.9% in 2026 and 1.2% in 2027, from 1.2% and 1.4% respectively," the statement read.
Before the outbreak of the conflict in the Middle East, the global economy was gaining momentum. A challenging geopolitical environment and US tariff uncertainty continued to weigh on growth, but easing inflation and a robust investment cycle related to the unfolding AI revolution provided important support.
