Kerala rejects TN's Mullaperiyar water level proposal, plans legal challenge

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 5 (UNI) Kerala on Wednesday strongly opposed the Tamil Nadu Government's announcement in its 2026-27 Budget to pursue raising the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam, reiterating that it would not allow the level to be increased even by a foot beyond the present limit of 142 feet.
State Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph said Kerala would officially convey its protest to the Tamil Nadu Government over the Budget announcement. He asserted that the safety of the ageing dam and the millions of people living downstream remained the State's top priority.
"There will be no change in Kerala's stand that the water level should be maintained at 142 feet. Under no circumstances will the State permit any increase in the reservoir level," the Minister said.
