‘South Park’ season 27 return cast into uncertainty over new $3 billion deal with Skydance

Los Angeles, July 15 (UNI) The return of the popular animated sit-com series 'South Park' for its 27th season has been cast into a web of uncertainty as behind-the-scenes tensions escalate between series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Paramount Global, and incoming studio owner Skydance.
The premiere, originally planned for earlier this month, has already been postponed to July 23 — but may face further delays, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

At the heart of the tensions is a newly proposed 10-year, $3 billion agreement for Parker and Stone — more than three times the value of their existing deal, which runs until 2027.

The pair’s production company, Park County, believes it reached a preliminary understanding with Paramount on the terms. However, Skydance, which is in the process of finalising its merger with Paramount, has objected, pushing instead for a five-year deal amid a shifting media environment and internal cost-control priorities.

A spokesperson for Park County confirmed that “there is no resolution at this time, but all involved recognise the need for a quick, positive resolution.” Skydance maintains it has the right to approve major contracts under the merger terms. Neither Skydance nor Paramount offered further comment.

Parker and Stone have retained high-profile attorney Bryan Freedman, signalling that legal action may follow, potentially accusing Skydance leadership — including CEO David Ellison and RedBird Capital's Jeff Shell — of interference. The creators may also opt to take their case to the public, highlighting tensions surrounding the merger’s impact on creative output.

The series is produced through South Park Digital Studios, a joint venture between Park County and Paramount-owned Comedy Partners.

A unique revenue-sharing agreement grants Park County roughly 50% of the show's streaming revenue, originally negotiated in 2007 before the streaming boom.

Streaming deals for ‘South Park expired at the end of June. The domestic arrangement with Warner Bros. Discovery’s HBO Max has been temporarily extended, while international streaming via Paramount+ has ceased altogether.

The current impasse raises questions not only about the future of Season 27 but also the long-term fate of the acclaimed animated series that has spanned over 28 years and 300 episodes.
