40 senior doctors and professors of RG Kar Hospital resign en-masse to support Juniors

Kolkata, Oct 8 (UNI) In a far reaching impact on the health sector, about 40 senior doctors and professors of the government-owned RG Kar medical college and hospital on Tuesday resigned en-masse to express their solidarity with their juniors, who have been on fast unto-death, which entered the fourth day, official sources said.
Toeing RG Kar medics, dozens of senior doctors and professors also threatened if the West Bengal government did not concede to their demands in the next 24 hours, more and more senior medics will resign. " We cannot allow our juniors to die on the streets," a senior medic of RG Kar said after serving his notice, referring to the junior doctors who were on fast since Saturday at Dorina Crossing in Esplanade.
In their resignation notice, the medics expressed concern over the rapidly deteriorating health of their protesting juniors. They called upon the government to immediately engage in talks with the protesting doctors or else more and more senior medics of the government owned hospitals to follow, which could jeopardise the entire health system across the state.
A senior doctor claimed if the government didn't act immediately to break the deadlock then anytime the fasting junior doctors' health will deteriorate further.
"These boys only take water and nothing else as they are determined to clean the health sector with 10-point demands". said the senior doctor.
Junior doctor Kinjal Nanda welcomed the decision of their seniors to quit enmasse and said their movement got new impetus in the movement.
The senior doctors sent letters to the senior health officials at Swasthya Bhavan regarding their quitting.
'We request the government to come into reconciliation with the protesting doctors and the ones who are sitting in indefinite hunger strike immediately,' the letter read.
'We are senior doctors of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital are giving mass resignation as the government seems to be oblivious of the deteriorating condition of the doctors on hunger strike and if the situation demands we will also go for individual resignation,' the resignation letter said.
