Another rainy, windy day cools Delhi; mercury falls over 5°C

New Delhi, 16 Jun (UNI): Cool breeze and scattered showers across Delhi on Tuesday morning brought much-needed relief from the heat, with temperatures dipping sharply across the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain and thunderstorms were reported in most parts of Delhi during the past 24 hours, accompanied by strong southwesterly winds.
Najafgarh recorded the highest rainfall during the period, receiving 24 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Tuesday, placing it in the “moderate” rainfall category. Other areas recorded lighter showers, with Palam receiving 9 mm of rain, while Safdarjung and Ayanagar recorded 2.8 mm and 2.5 mm, respectively. The intermittent rain and gusty winds led to a significant fall in temperatures across the capital. At Safdarjung, Delhi’s base weather station, the maximum temperature settled at 33.3 degrees Celsius, 4.2 degrees below the previous day’s level.
The drop was even more pronounced at some stations. Palam and Ayanagar recorded maximum temperatures of 32.5 degrees Celsius and 32.7 degrees Celsius, respectively, registering declines of more than 5 degrees Celsius. In a statement, the IMD said there was an “appreciable fall” of 4-5 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures and a noticeable decline in minimum temperatures at many places across Delhi over the past 24 hours. Weather officials attributed the cooler conditions to persistent southwesterly winds blowing at speeds of 15-20 kmph, with gusts touching 46 kmph.
