Another setback for Vijay as ‘Theri’ re-release gets postponed

New Delhi, Jan 14 (UNI) The re-release of Thalapathy Vijay’s blockbuster ‘Theri’ has been postponed after producers of several upcoming films requested a reshuffling of the theatrical calendar to prevent overcrowding at cinemas.
The delay was officially announced by producer Kalaippuli S. Thanu on behalf of V Creations, the production house behind Theri.
Sharing the update on X, Thanu stated, “As per the request from the producers of upcoming releases, we have decided to postpone the release of Theri.”
A separate statement from the ‘Theri’ re-release team confirmed that the film would not arrive as planned due to coordination issues with other producers and distributors. A new release date has not yet been announced.
The postponement adds to a series of setbacks surrounding Vijay’s projects, particularly his upcoming film ‘Jana Nayagan’, which is currently facing certification hurdles.
The film’s producers, KVN Productions LLP, have approached the Supreme Court seeking an ex parte interim stay on a Madras High Court division bench order dated January 9, 2026, which stalled the film’s certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The division bench order had overturned an earlier ruling by a single-judge bench of the High Court that directed the CBFC to grant Jana Nayagan a U/A 16 certificate.
In its plea, KVN Productions has requested either an ex parte or ad-interim stay on the January 9 order, along with any other relief the Supreme Court may deem appropriate.
Meanwhile, the CBFC has filed a caveat in the apex court, urging that no order be passed without hearing the certification authority. The controversy began after the CBFC withheld certification, citing concerns that certain scenes in the film could hurt religious sentiments.
While the filmmakers initially secured a favourable order from the single-judge bench, the CBFC challenged it, leading the division bench to halt the certification and seek expert opinion, particularly on scenes depicting the armed forces.
‘Jana Nayagan’, directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Venkat K. Narayana under KVN Productions, was originally scheduled for a January 9 release. The film is being billed as Thalapathy Vijay’s final outing before his transition into politics.
