APEDA Facilitates First-Ever Export of Jharkhand Mangoes to UK, Boosting Women Farmers

New Delhi, June 7 (UNI) In a milestone for Jharkhand’s horticulture sector, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first commercial export of fresh mangoes from the state to the United Kingdom, opening new international market opportunities for local farmers and women-led producer groups.
The inaugural consignment, comprising 1.5 metric tonnes of premium Amrapali mangoes, was flagged off from Kolkata on June 4 and is destined for London. The shipment was sourced from Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd., an all-women farmer producer company based in Bano block of Simdega district, and exported by Kolkata-based JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd.
The export marks a significant breakthrough for Jharkhand’s agricultural sector, particularly for women farmers, who are now directly linked to global markets through APEDA’s export promotion initiatives.
Officials said the shipment was the outcome of an Export-Oriented Capacity Building Programme organised by APEDA in Simdega on May 5. The programme trained farmer producer companies (FPCs), farmer producer organisations (FPOs), and progressive farmers on export standards, quality requirements and international market opportunities.
Following the training, APEDA facilitated a direct business linkage between Beura FPC and the exporter, enabling the procurement of export-quality mangoes from the district.
The initiative has not only integrated local farmers into the export value chain but also helped them secure better prices for their produce compared to prevailing domestic market rates.
"The successful export demonstrates the potential of farmer collectives in Jharkhand to cater to global markets and highlights the role of women-led organisations in agricultural exports," officials said.
The development is expected to encourage farmers in the region to adopt improved cultivation techniques, better post-harvest management practices and compliance with international quality standards.
Known for its favourable agro-climatic conditions, Jharkhand has emerged as a promising hub for horticulture crops. The **Amrapali variety**, widely cultivated in the state, enjoys strong consumer acceptance due to its rich flavour, sweetness and quality attributes.
With this first commercial shipment, Jharkhand joins a growing list of Indian states exporting fresh fruits to international destinations, strengthening India's position in global agricultural trade.
APEDA, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has been actively promoting agricultural exports through capacity-building programmes, quality enhancement initiatives, traceability systems and market development activities. The authority has also focused on integrating women-led and tribal farmer organisations into export-oriented value chains.
The successful dispatch of the maiden mango consignment is being viewed as a major step towards expanding export opportunities for Jharkhand's farmers and enhancing rural incomes through access to overseas markets.
