Australia bowlers restrict Lanka to 229/9 on Day 1

Galle, Feb 6 (UNI) Australia's bowlers produced a disciplined performance on Day One of the second Test against Sri Lanka here on Thursday as the hosts finished at 229 for 9 after 90 overs.
Sri Lanka's top order initially provided a strong foundation, reaching 93 for 1, but the middle order collapsed in a dramatic period after lunch, losing 4 wickets for just 34 runs. However, a seventh-wicket partnership of 65 between Kusal Mendis and Ramesh Mendis ensured Sri Lanka stayed in the contest.
Nathan Lyon was the standout performer for Australia, claiming 3 wickets, including the key scalp of Angelo Mathews. The off spinner's consistency and variations saw him finish the day with 549 wickets in Test cricket. Mitchell Starc also contributed significantly, taking 2 wickets with the second new ball, while Matthew Kuhnemann and Travis Head added vital breakthroughs.
