Bengal: TMC’s first protest in Opposition marred by thin turnout

Kolkata, May 20 (UNI) The Trinamool Congress’s first major protest programme after its stunning defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections saw the participation of around 35 of the party’s 80 MLAs in a sit-in demonstration near the B R Ambedkar statue on the Assembly premises on Wednesday.
The protest was held against alleged post-poll violence, eviction drives and the use of bulldozers to demolish structures.
However, it drew more attention for who stayed away than for those who turned up, exposing signs of unease within a party now returning to opposition politics after 15 years. Senior leaders including Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Kunal Ghosh, Nayana Banerjee and Ritabrata Banerjee were present.
