Bihar cabinet approves 41 proposals including settlement of Son river water-sharing dispute

Patna, Jan 13 (UNI) The Bihar Cabinet gave its green signal on Tuesday to 41 proposals including settlement of the long-pending Son River water-sharing dispute between Bihar and Jharkhand.
After the meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Additional Chief Secretary Cabinet Arvind Chaudhary told newspersons here that the cabinet gave its nod for the settlement of the Son River water-sharing dispute after nearly 53 years.
Chaudhary said that under the Bansagar Agreement signed in 1973, the then undivided Bihar was entitled to 7.75 million acre-feet (MAF) of water. After the bifurcation of Bihar in 2000, Jharkhand had been demanding division of the water share between the two states. Due to the unresolved dispute, clearance for the Indrapuri Reservoir Project in Bihar could not be granted for years. Following the finalisation of a water-sharing formula, both states have now agreed that out of the undivided Bihar’s share of 7.75 MAF, Bihar will receive 5.75 MAF while Jharkhand will get 2.00 MAF.
