Captain's Congress return speculation gains momentum

Chandigarh, June 4 (UNI) Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh's potential return to the Congress fold has triggered intense political speculation ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. The development gained momentum following statements from senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who confirmed that the veteran leader is in regular contact with the party.
Speculation intensified after Hooda, the former Chief Minister of Haryana and a close associate of Singh, acknowledged that the veteran leader remains a respected senior colleague who is in touch with them. This statement has fueled rumors that a consensus might be building within the Congress leadership to facilitate Singh's homecoming, especially given his recent positive remarks regarding his former party.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party downplayed the reports, dismissing them as political conjecture. Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliyeval remarked that remaining in touch with political peers does not indicate a formal shift. He suggested that Hooda's comments should not be over-interpreted, pointing out that senior regional leaders frequently maintain informal lines of communication regardless of party lines.
