Chattisgarh to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation for harassing woman sarpanch: SC

New Delhi, Nov 14 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Chattisgarh to pay compensation to a woman sarpanch who was harassed and forced to step down from her post.
A bench comprising Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan directed the state government to reinstate Sonam Lakra and pay her Rs 1 lakh as compensation for the harassment and for being forced to step down from the post of Sarpanch.
Justice Surya Kant said, “This is a case of high-handedness in removing an elected sarpanch woman who thought of serving her village in a remote area of Chattisgarh, Instead of admiring her commitments or extending the helping hand, what the appellant intended to do for her village, she has been wronged for absolutely unjustified reasons.”
