Chhattisgarh CM lays foundation for 'Chitrotpala International Film City'

Chhattisgarh, Jan 24 (UNI) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Saturday presided over the foundation stone ceremony of the 'Chitrotpala International Film City' and the adjoining Tribal & Cultural Convention Centre, marking a major step toward expanding India's filmmaking infrastructure.
The ambitious project, valued at approximately USD 49 million, aims to position Chhattisgarh as a new hub for film and content production in the country.
The first phase of the project will be developed across 95 acres and is being spearheaded by creator Tarun Rathi through Rajnandini Entertainment Ltd. and Indradeep Infra Ltd.
The initiative has received support under the Special Assistance Scheme from India's Ministry of Tourism, underscoring central government backing for what is being positioned as the country's first fully equipped international film city.
Industry interest has already begun to surface, with early discussions reportedly considering the facility as a potential shooting location for upcoming big-ticket projects such as 'Golmaal 5' and 'Gadaar 3', along with several other titles currently in pre-production.
Beyond film production infrastructure, the development will also feature exhibition and convention facilities through partnerships with India Exposition Mart Limited (IEML) and the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH).
IEML chair Rakesh Kumar and EPCH chair Neeraj Khanna are collaborating on facilities that will include an exhibition centre, convention hall, hotel, business showrooms and a helipad, aimed at generating economic opportunities for local artisans and tribal communities.
Veteran filmmaker Anil Sharma of the Gadar franchise was present at the ceremony, lending industry weight to Chhattisgarh's filmmaking ambitions.
The state government has committed INR 150 crore (USD 16.3 million) for the project's initial phase, with an additional INR 250–300 crore (USD 27.2 million to USD 32.7 million) earmarked for subsequent development stages by the developers.
"There has long been a demand from the people of the state for our own film city, which will help take stories from Chhattisgarh to global audiences," CM Vishnu Deo Sai said at the event.
He added, "I am glad that the government is supporting this new world-class film city with INR150 crore in the first phase and INR250–300 crore in later phases. It should take us about two years to fully develop this dream project."
Highlighting the project's vision as a one-stop production hub, Creator Rathi said, "We are trying to support filmmakers with all possible equipment and a complete ecosystem so that producers and crews from Mumbai and across India can come to Raipur to shoot and execute everything seamlessly. The accessibility and the shooting-friendly environment will help the filmmakers from start to finish."
The Chitrotpala Film City reflects Chhattisgarh's broader effort to diversify India's production landscape beyond traditional hubs such as Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai, while simultaneously creating employment opportunities across creative industries and allied sectors.
