Congress flags threat to Democracy as RTI Act faces dilution

Bengaluru, Oct 12 (UNI) The Congress today warned that the Right to Information (RTI) Act, one of India’s most powerful tools for transparency and citizen empowerment, has been steadily weakened since 2014, posing a serious threat to democracy.
The party highlighted the 2019 amendments to the Act, which allowed the union Government to determine the tenure and service conditions of Information Commissioners, undermining their independence. This was further compounded by the 2023 Digital Personal Data Protection Act, which expanded the definition of “personal information,” potentially restricting access to public-interest data, including government expenditures, voter lists, and political funding.
DK Shivakumar, President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, said RTI has historically been a lifeline for marginalised communities, helping citizens secure ration entitlements, pensions, unpaid wages, and scholarships. “By restricting access to information, these moves threaten the very essence of democratic accountability,” he said.
