DDLJ’s 30-year milestone marked with ‘Iconic Statue at Leicester Square’

London, Dec 6 (UNI) Even after 30 glorious years, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) still holds its timeless charm among the new generation. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol reunited in London to celebrate the milestone by unveiling a bronze statue of their iconic on-screen pose—marking the first time an Indian film has been honoured at Leicester Square.
A few hours after the ceremony, SRK celebrated the milestone on Instagram in his trademark filmy style, opening his post with the unforgettable line: “Bade bade deshon mein aisi chhoti chhoti baatein hoti rehti hain, Senorita!”
He expressed his joy over the statue honour, noting that DDLJ is the first Indian film to be commemorated with a statue in the Scenes in the Square trail. He thanked fans in the UK and invited visitors to “meet Raj and Simran” whenever they visit London.
His post further read, “Incredibly delighted that DDLJ is the first Indian film to be honoured with a statue in the Scenes in the Square trail.. A big thank you to everyone in the UK for making this possible. Come meet Raj & Simran if and when you are in London… we would love to see you make more memories with DDLJ…”
SRK also shared photos from the event, where Kajol’s children, Yug and Nysa, joined the celebration. The two paid a nostalgic tribute by wearing outfits reminiscent of the iconic looks from DDLJ’s Tujhe Dekha Toh sequence, a black leather jacket and a white suit.
The bronze statue, featuring the duo in one of DDLJ’s signature poses, now stands among celebrated characters from global cinema, including Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Paddington, and superheroes like Batman and Wonder Woman.
Reflecting on the honour, Kajol said, “It’s incredible to see DDLJ continue to receive so much love even after 30 years. Watching the statue being unveiled felt like reliving a piece of our history—a story that has travelled across generations.” She added that seeing it placed in Leicester Square, a location significant to DDLJ, made the moment even more special.
Released in 1995, DDLJ follows Raj and Simran, two young NRIs who fall in love while travelling across Europe and India, beginning with a memorable train encounter from King’s Cross station. Leicester Square also appears in the film during the scene where Raj and Simran unknowingly cross paths near the area’s iconic cinemas—Vue and Odeon—before embarking on their adventure.
