Dua Lipa earns GCSE in Spanish

London, Oct 14 (UNI) Pop icon Dua Lipa has added a new accomplishment to her ever-growing list, she's now a certified Spanish speaker.
The Levitating hitmaker proudly revealed that she has earned her GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) qualification in Spanish, an achievement that reflects both her intellectual curiosity and disciplined pursuit of knowledge beyond the music stage.
Lipa posted a collage to Instagram showing her GCSE certificate and tagged her teacher, writing: “Also just graduated this morning in my GCSE Spanish Love youuuu @catyvillanuevamatar the best teacher!!!” alongside an image of her posing with the certificate while her instructor smiles over Zoom, celebrating the news with a balloon.
According to the requirements of the UK Department of Education, to obtain this certificate the student must demonstrate “understanding of spoken and written language, knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, and communicate effectively orally and in writing.” Skills are assessed through four tests: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students must also have cultural and regional familiarity with Spanish-speaking countries, per the website.
True to her indefatigable nature, Lipa has already set her sights higher. But Lipa is advancing her education further, posting in another story that she is preparing to study the Spanish A-Level textbook with the words, “next next next !!!!!!!”
Her enthusiasm for the language comes at a fitting time, as she wraps up the North American leg of her Radical Optimism Tour before heading to South America, where she will perform across Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Chile and Mexico, reports Vanity Fair.
Even before preparing for the exam, Lipa was already quite skilled in Spanish, as she demonstrated at the Mad Cool Festival 2024, where she spoke more than a minute in Spanish on stage, which has now been translated back to English: “Madrid, thank you very much for tonight,” she said then.
“I am very, very happy and grateful to be here. I feel very lucky and blessed. The people here in Spain have so much light and love, it fills me with energy. I want to tell them many things, but it’s a little difficult, my Spanish is not perfect and I need more words," she added.
Now she will have more vocabulary and therefore more ease and opportunities to continue deepening and enjoying the Spanish culture.
Lipa has already shared her passion for Pedro Almodóvar’s films; the director from La Mancha is also a fan and friend of hers, as evidenced by the fact that he agreed to participate in her podcast, Dua Lipa: At Your Service. Lipa is also a big fan of Spanish writer Alana S. Portero, whom she has also interviewed on her podcast and whose work she has promoted via her book club.
And then there is the matter of Duolingo, the language learning app whose mascot was a green owl named Duo. The marketing campaign often drew parallels between Duo and Lipa, given the similarity in their names. As a marketing ploy earlier this year, the brand killed off its signature character, writing in a cheeky statement on their official X page that “Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know.” Duolingo’s remarks concluded with, “We appreciate you respecting Dua Lipa’s privacy at this time.”
“Til’ death duo part,” Lipa wrote on X, replying to Duolingo’s statement. Perhaps he is in part to thank for all the new Spanish she has been learning. UNI NST SSP
