Bhubaneswar, May 10 (UNI) Early diagnosis and timely treatment can help patients with Lupus lead a normal life, Prof. (Dr.) Pradipta Sekhar Patro, Head of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) and SUM Hospital here, said today.
Describing Lupus as a lesser-known autoimmune disease, Dr. Patro said the condition primarily affects women between the ages of 20 and 50 years. However, with proper medical care and regular monitoring, patients can effectively manage the disease and maintain a normal lifestyle, he informed.
The immune system in the human body comprises a huge network of cells which is designed to protect humans from the environment and guard against any damage to the body’s own cells. But sometimes the system sends out confusing signals causing the body's defences to attack its own cells, Prof. (Dr.) Patro said at a news conference organised to mark the World Lupus Day.
