Ranveer Singh issues apology after controversial ‘Kantara’ mimicry at IFFI

New Delhi, Dec 3 (UNI) Ranveer Singh issued a public apology on Tuesday after facing criticism for allegedly mimicking ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ actor Rishab Shetty during the closing ceremony of the 2025 International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, sparking a heated debate online.
Giving a clarification on his Instagram Stories, Ranveer wrote, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s incredible performance in the film. As an actor, I understand the effort it takes to portray such a demanding scene, and he has my utmost admiration.” He continued, “I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I’ve hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise.”
In a viral clip from the ceremony, Ranveer was seen praising Shetty’s performance, saying, “I watched it in theatres, Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially the scene where the female ghost enters your body.”
He then reenacted the moment, prompting laughter from Shetty but sparking backlash online, with many users calling the imitation disrespectful.
‘Kantara: Chapter 1’ explores the origins of Daiva worship in Tulunadu, tracing it back to the fourth-century Kadamba dynasty. Shetty stars as Berme, the guardian of the Kantara forest and its tribal communities. The film also features Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, and Jayaram in prominent roles.
As for his upcoming work, Ranveer Singh is gearing up for ‘Dhurandhar,’ a spy-action thriller written, directed, and co-produced by Aditya Dhar.
The film, produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, also stars Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal, with Sara Arjun and Rakesh Bedi in supporting roles.
