IFFK to honour Youssef Chahine with Birth Centenary Retrospective

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 3 (UNI) The 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), to be held from December 12 to 19, 2025, will pay tribute to iconic Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine with a special retrospective marking his birth centenary year.
The Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, the organiser of the festival, has curated three of Chahine’s finest works for the showcase.
The films selected for the centenary retrospective are Cairo Station (1958), Alexandria Again and Forever (1989), and The Other (1999), each reflecting different phases of the auteur’s expansive creative journey.
A towering figure of Arab and Egyptian cinema, Chahine was the recipient of the 50th Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Active from the 1950s until his death in 2008 at the age of 82, he played a pivotal role in shaping modern Egyptian cinema and famously launched the career of international star Omar Sharif.
When the Cairo International Film Festival compiled its list of the greatest 100 Egyptian films, twelve of Chahine’s works made the cut. Eight of his films screened at Cannes, and in 1979, Alexandria… Why? won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Regarded as a visionary who brought Arab cinema to the world stage, Chahine’s films continue to resonate for their political insight, emotional depth, and cinematic innovation.
Cairo Station portrays the tragic tale of a differently-abled newspaper vendor consumed by an obsessive love for a soft-drink seller. Alexandria Again and Forever, an autobiographical narrative, unfolds against the backdrop of a hunger strike in the Egyptian film industry. The Other examines themes of globalisation, consumerism, and intolerance, exploring the fractures of the contemporary world.
The retrospective promises to be one of the key highlights of IFFK 2025, offering festival goers a rare chance to revisit the legacy of one of global cinema’s most influential auteurs.
