Swanand Kirkire and Sudhir Mishra to reunite after 18 years for 'Summer of 77'

Mumbai, May 5 (UNI) Following the success of his recent show "Bandwale", acclaimed writer, lyricist, actor and composer Swanand Kirkire is set to embark on a new creative chapter with filmmaker Sudhir Mishra’s upcoming political drama series "Summer of 77".
Kirkire is composing music for 'Summer of 77'. After working together in the songs 'Bawra Mann' and 'Khoya Khoya Chand' from 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi', the famous duo has come together once again for 'Summer of 77'.
Set during the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977, the series is an eight-part Hindi series that explores the youth's rebellion, idealism, and the changing times. The series stars Rahul Bhatt, Isha Talwar, Vishal Vashisht, Saurabh Shukla, Rajat Kapoor, Manav Vij, TJ Bhanu and Anjan Dutt.
In a significant creative achievement for the project, Kirkire composed the music for the entire series, which consists of six songs. He also sang three of these songs, notably "Yeh Kaisa Hai Junoon," which is considered to reflect the emotional and political intensity of the period.
Speaking about the project, Kirkire said, "After 'Bandwaale', I wanted to do something where I could once again delve deeply into the music, making it a part of the story, and 'Summer of 77' gave me that opportunity. It's not just a story about a period, but about a very emotional time in our history, when music, poetry, and expression played a huge role in shaping the voice of protest and identity."
He added that composing music for a story based on the Emergency is a huge responsibility. It's not just composing melodies, but trying to capture the spirit of a generation that was questioning power, dreaming of change and finding its voice amidst the chaos. The songs had to be rooted in that era and also resonate with today's audience. Finding this balance was both challenging and deeply satisfying.
He composed six songs for this series and singing three of them was a very personal experience for him, especially 'Yeh Kaisa Hai Junoon'. This song captures the passion, confusion, and energy of the youth of that era. It doesn't just speak of love or rebellion, but rather captures the deep emotional turmoil of that time.
On his experience of working with Sudhir Mishra, he elaborated, "It has always been an enriching experience, as he brings such honesty and depth to the story. This is our fifth collaboration after 'Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi' and 'Khoya Khoya Chand'. He gives music a full place in the story, which is rare and absolutely beautiful. When a director trusts music to convey emotions, it inspires a composer to do even better." UNI NST SSP
