NFDC-NFAI restores eight iconic films of Ritwik Ghatak in 4K format for global audiences

Mumbai, Jun 3 (UNI) In a major milestone for film preservation, the National Film Development Corporation–National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI) has completed the restoration of the feature films of celebrated filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak in pristine 4K quality, ensuring that some of Indian cinema’s most influential works can be experienced by future generations in their finest form.
To commemorate the birth centenary of Ghatak, NFDC-NFAI, in partnership with the British Film Institute (BFI), is organizing a landmark exhibition at the prestigious BFI Southbank in London, starting in June 2026. This comprehensive exhibition will provide an international audience with the opportunity to experience his revolutionary storytelling style and profound aesthetic vision in its best, purest visual form.
The project to restore Ritwik Ghatak's films is one of the most commendable works of the National Film Heritage.
Expressing his views on the institutional significance of this international collaboration, Prakash Magdum, Managing Director, National Film Heritage Council (NFDC), said that India has one of the world's most vibrant cinematic heritages, and the NFDC-NFAI, under the National Film Heritage Council (NFHM), is entrusted with the responsibility of restoring and preserving these heritages to the highest global standards.
He said that on the occasion of Ritwik Ghatak's birth centenary, we are delighted to collaborate with the BFI for this retrospective exhibition in London. It provides an excellent platform for the global film community to experience Ritwik Ghatak's genius and witness firsthand the excellence of India's archival achievements.
Achieved under the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM), this extensive archival achievement is a flagship initiative of the MIB, dedicated to preserving the nation's audiovisual heritage. The meticulous 4K restoration utilised various original film elements preserved over decades by the NFDC-NFAI and the invaluable resources of the West Bengal State Film Archives.
To ensure visual authenticity and strict adherence to the legendary director's original cinematic vision, the color grading process was directly supervised by National Award-winning Indian cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay.
Praising the NFHM restoration project, he expressed his genuine pride and excitement in being a part of restoring Ritwik Ghatak's films, as he is considered one of the most original filmmakers both nationally and internationally. As a cinematographer, it provided him with the opportunity to witness Ritwik Ghatak's beautiful art up close. He expressed his profound gratitude to the entire team for this tireless yet remarkable effort.
The London Retrospective will provide an opportunity to engage with Ritwik Ghatak's creative work spanning multiple periods of his illustrious career. The extensive program includes newly restored 4K presentations of eight of his seminal narrative features, including "Nagarik", "Ajantrik", "Bari Theke", "Meghe Dhaka Tara", "Komal Gandhar", "Subarnarekha", "Titas Ekti Nadir Naam" and "Jukti Takko Aar Gappo".
Complementing these masterpieces, the showcase will also feature his historically significant small-format works, documentaries, and rare unfinished works, including Bihar Ke Scenic Sthal, Musafir, Darr, Rendezvous, Nagrik Sanrakshan, Kal Ke Vaigyanik, Ye Kyun, My Lenin, Puruliyar Chhau, Darbar Gati Padma, Hirer Prajapati, Chinnamul, Ramkinkar Baij, Raunjer Golam, and Baglar Bang Darshan.
This partnership between NFDC-NFAI and the BFI reinforces India's continued commitment to restoring its cinematic heritage to world-class standards. By supporting such comprehensive restoration and promotion initiatives under the National Film Heritage Mission, the Government of India ensures that these masterpieces continue to inspire global audiences for decades to come, transcending geographical boundaries, a statement said.
