EV maker BNC Motors targets 50 pc exports

Chennai, Sep 10 (UNI) Electric two wheeler maker BNC Motors plans to ramp up its production and exports this fiscal by several folds, said a top company official.
“We plan to roll out about 10,000 units this fiscal and ship out over 50 percent. We are looking at newer markets for our models,” Anirudh Ravi Narayanan, CEO and Co-Founder, BNC Motors told this writer.
According to him, the company rolled out about 3,000 units and exported about 500-600 units.
When asked about the quantum jump in his export target for this fiscal Narayanan said the company is exploring newer markets apart from shipping to African and Sri Lankan markets.
BNC Motors exports its Challenger model.
Narayanan said the company is hoping to clock a turnover of about Rs 100 crore this fiscal up from about Rs 25-30 crore logged last fiscal.
On the impact of reduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) powered two wheelers with a cubic capacity of less than 350cc Narayanan said the EV sales would be affected.
“The reduction in GST for ICE two wheelers and the resultant lower on road prices is likely to affect the sales of EVs given the constraints like – difficulty in getting finance, unclear resale value, lack of battery charging infrastructure across the country,” Narayanan said.
According to him, the impact will be higher in the case of entry level EV two wheelers priced at Rs 1.20 lakh and lower.
“However, the last mile goods delivery companies will continue to buy EVs as they look at the total cost of operations rather than the initial price,” Narayanan said.
Earlier the GST on ICE two wheelers was 28 percent and for EVs it was 5 percent. The huge difference as well as the subsidy schemes powered EV two wheeler sales.
Now the GST difference between ICE and EV two wheelers is 13 percent.
While the GST rate for EVs has been retained at 5 percent, the revised rates for ICE two wheelers is 18 percent.
