Filmmaker Mira Nair is eyeing Anjali Sivaraman for Amrita Sher-Gil

Budapest, May 11 (UNI) Filmmaker Mira Nair has finalised Anjali Sivaraman to portray iconic painter Amrita Sher-Gil in her upcoming international biopic "AMRI", concluding an extensive global casting process that drew several prominent names from the Indian film industry.
Nair describes Sher-Gil as a woman who lived entirely on her own terms, often comparing her impact to that of Frida Kahlo. And casting her part was no small feat. Mira Nair, alongside renowned casting director Dilip Shankar, reportedly auditioned over 100 actresses, according to Variety India.
The search spanned from Mumbai to London and New York, testing both established icons and fresh faces. While heavyweights like Triptii Dimri, Janhvi Kapoor, Ananya Panday, Wamiqa Gabbi and Tanya Maniktala were all in contention, Nair ultimately pivoted toward Sivaraman’s raw intensity and striking resemblance to the painter.
Best known for her performances in Netflix’s Class and the film Cobalt Blue, Sivaraman’s selection marks a decisive career milestone, positioning her at the centre of a major international production under one of India’s most globally recognised filmmakers.
The film, currently being shot in Budapest before moving to locations across India, is a large-scale biographical drama that traces the life of Amrita Sher-Gil between 1915 and 1941. The film follows her artistic journey from Paris, where she trained in fine arts, to her return to India, where she produced some of her most influential work.
Born to a Punjabi Sikh father and a Hungarian mother, Sher-Gil is remembered as a pioneering modern artist who changed Indian painting by focusing on ordinary people, especially women and rural life.
Alongside Anjali, the movie stars Jim Sarbh and Hollywood actress Emily Mortimer. UNI NST SSP
