FWICE opposes undeclared ban n "Bengal Files"

Bengaluru, Sept 8 (UNI) The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) today condemned the "undeclared ban" on the screening of the film "Bengal Files" in theatres across West Bengal, terming it a serious threat to freedom of expression and creative liberty in Indian cinema.
Representing 36 affiliated associations and thousands of members across the film and television industry, FWICE highlighted that the film, which has been duly certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), is facing restrictions without any official legal order.
In a detailed statement, FWICE expressed "shock" over the move, saying that such "indirect suppression of cinema is not only illegal but also sets a dangerous precedent" for the future of creative works in the country. The federation stressed that filmmakers dedicate immense resources, talent, and hard work to bring important stories to the screen, and denying audiences the opportunity to watch these films is a "violation" of democratic rights.
The statement specifically called out theatre owners in West Bengal who appear to be complying with unwritten directives enforcing the ban, describing their actions as discouraging creative voices and undermining public choice. "Suppressing a film without official sanction is unjust and undermines the very framework of film exhibition laws in India," FWICE noted.
FWICE urged the government to take immediate cognisance of the situation and ensure that "Bengal Files" is screened across West Bengal without obstruction or disturbance. The federation also appealed to all theatre owners to resume screenings immediately, highlighting the significant investment and artistic labour that went into the making of the film.
FWICE called upon producer bodies across the country to raise objections against what it described as an "illegal ban." The federation reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of filmmakers and vowed not to remain silent in the face of attempts to curtail fundamental freedoms of expression and dissemination of creative works.
The press release was issued under the signatures of Ashoke Pandit, Chief Advisor; BN Tiwari, President; Ashok Dubey, Honorary General Secretary; and Gangeshwar Lal Shrivastav, Treasurer of FWICE. UNI BDN SSP
