Hasina sentenced to death by tribunal; Bangladesh asks India to extradite her

Dhaka/New Delhi, Nov 17 (UNI) Bangladesh’s former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was on Monday sentenced to death by the country’s war crimes tribunal over a crackdown on anti-government protesters last year, terming it as "crimes against humanity". Hasina, who lives in India in self-exile, has trashed the tribunal as “rigged” and rejected the allegations.
India in a guarded response said it has noted the verdict and is committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs also said that India will continue to engage constructively with all stakeholders for ensuring peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in Bangladesh. The statement noticeably put double quote marks on the words "International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh", to signify that it is a purely domestic tribunal.
