Himachal MNREGA workers threaten stir over delayed pay, job loss

Shimla, Oct 12 (UNI) The CITU-affiliated MNREGA and Construction Workers Union, Mandi District Committee, Himachal Pradesh, has decided to launch a public relations campaign from November 1 in villages over the demands of MNREGA workers and the non-release of financial assistance from the State Labour Welfare Board for the past four years. Block-level meetings will be held prior to the campaign.
Addressing a meeting today under the chairmanship of District President Rajesh Sharma at Comrade Tara Chand Bhawan, Mandi, CITU District President Bhupendra Singh said that for the past three months, workers have been illegally deprived of their jobs in panchayats, a matter to which the union has raised strong objections. The union will also demand that MNREGA workers be paid the Himachal government’s minimum wage of Rs 425.
Singh added that the provision for installing poles for the safety of homes under MNREGA has now been abruptly abolished, making it even more difficult for workers to obtain 100 days of work. Separately, the union highlighted that the State Labour Welfare Board, Hamirpur, has withheld over Rs 1 crore in aid for the past four years, affecting 35,000 workers including MNREGA, rural construction, and four-lane workers in Mandi district.
