I'm not a fan of the Indian National Army: Gautam Hazarika

Kolkata, Jan 23 (UNI) Author Gautam Hazarika has said he does not share the popular admiration for the Indian National Army (INA), arguing that its history has been overly romanticised while ignoring the conditions under which it was formed.
Speaking at the Kolkata Literary Meet 2026 on his book 'The Forgotten Indian Prisoners of World War II,' Hazarika said he does not subscribe to the heroic image usually attached to the INA. "Not a fan of INA to be honest. We only tell half the story. But the circumstances of its birth and the suffering of its soldiers remain missing."
"The INA did not emerge in a vacuum, nor was it an entirely independent force," Hazarika said. The author noted that the INA was formed from Indian POWs (Prisoners of War) taken after the fall of Singapore in 1942 and operated under Japanese support and control. "If the Japanese had not allowed the INA to form, the INA would not have formed."
